SugarOak Green BuildingGoing Green
At SugarOak we recognize that what we build has an impact on the natural environment, our quality of life and our health. We understand that today’s Homeowner is concerned about issues like environmental impact, operating costs and resale value. We continue to be committed to adding value to our construction projects while also meeting the needs of our clients through our knowledge and experience with cost effective and affordable green construction techniques.

We believe that an integrated approach to design and construction is the most effective way to achieve better performance and comfort, however, a variety of sustainable, environmentally friendly building products and construction methods can be used at any phase of construction. We examine the resource efficiency of each project, prioritize our client’s individual green building goals and develop strategies for success. Improving the exterior envelope of a home by incorporating advanced insulation, air sealing techniques, moisture control, superior window performance, energy efficient appliances & lighting, and high efficiency heating and cooling systems that incorporate sealed duct systems has a dramatic impact on energy use and comfort.

To assess our performance, we utilize independent third party professional verifiers, Home Energy Raters (HERS) to inspect and test our work. They assure that our homes meet the Energy Star or National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) performance guidelines.

SugarOak has a history of environmental awareness. We have been installing energy efficient geothermal systems and using advanced insulating techniques since the early 1990’s. We strive to stay aware of changes in this dynamic industry by participating in the Northern Virginia Building Industry Association (NVBIA) Green Committee and serving on the Education Committee. In 2009, we volunteered to use one of our homes under construction, as a field instruction portion of an Energy Star Class, evaluated by the National Director of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Sam Rashkin. It was a great hands-on learning experience for everyone!

SugarOak is a partner with the EPA as an Energy Star Builder; homes that earn the Energy Star rating meet rigorous EPA guidelines. According to the EPA, Energy Star homes typically use 15% less energy than homes built to meet the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC), and typically use 20% - 30% less energy than standard homes. We also participate with the NAHB and have a NAHB Certified Green Professional (CGP) leading our team.
