| SugarOak History |
The origins of SugarOak can be traced to the year 1979. In that year, Dan Baker and his business partner, Doug Cobb, designed, engineered, and constructed a 40,000 square foot office development in Herndon, Virginia.
The project, SugarOak Office Retreat, was a trend setting development situated in a wooded environment adjacent to Sugarland Run and a 23 acre park. This initial office project laid the foundation, and provided the name, for the SugarOak companies.
SugarOak Corporation – Construction
In the subsequent years, SugarOak’s construction business grew to include both commercial and residential projects, and its award winning residential construction group has been recognized for its expertise in building high end custom homes on challenging sites. |
SugarOak Management Services
In the late 1980s, building on the management experience gained through its management of SugarOak Office Retreat, SugarOak expanded its management group and began providing asset and property management services to third parties. Two of SugarOak’s initial clients were Union Land & Management Company and Coastal American Company. These companies, both real estate holding companies with multiple properties, provided a base upon which SugarOak management services grew over the years. Today, SugarOak manages over $200 million worth of properties located in 10 states, encompassing all major property types, including retail, office, multifamily, and light industrial. |

SugarOak Properties – Real Estate Investments
In 2001, SugarOak began offering real estate investment opportunities to a select group of private investors. In its first investment offering, SugarOak put together a group of investors to purchase an office building in Chantilly, Virginia. In 2002 and 2003, SugarOak formed a group of tenant in common investors to purchase five class A office buildings totaling over 500,000 square feet in Richmond, Virginia. In 2004, SugarOak launched its first investment fund, the SugarOak Acquisition and Revitalization Fund (SOAR). SugarOak’s second fund, the SugarOak Opportunity Fund, opened in May 2009 and remains currently active.
From its beginnings in 1979, SugarOak has grown into a full service real estate company offering construction, management, and investment services across multiple states and multiple property types. SugarOak currently has 44 employees. |
